Carmarthen, thought to be the oldest town in Wales is a community and county town of Carmarthenshire. Carmarthen lies on the River Towy and is one of the most beautiful towns in Wales with a very complex and interesting history. Legend has it that Merlin was born in a cave outside Carmarthen. Tourist attractions include heritage sites such as the Roman amphitheatre, medieval castle and Gwili Railway. The Picton's monument in memory of Thomas Picton, who died in the Battle of Waterloo was erected in 1828 and the General Nott Statue was erected in 1851, both monuments are a must see. Other sites worth exploring are the King Morgan Footbridge with its unusual yet modern architecture, the Mount, Guildhall Square, Carmarthen Castle, the Red Dragon, St Peter's Church and Lammas Street. For the sporty visitor Carmarthen offers golf courses, cycling paths, hiking and many more activities. This beautiful town is not to be missed when traveling to Wales.
